Madeira Airport is an international airport located near Funchal in island Madeira in Portugal. The airport controls national and international air traffic of the island of Madeira. Situated 1000 kilometers from the Portuguese capital, the island of Madeira is linked to the world by a series of airline connections, with hundreds of different flights. Several international airlines depart from and arrive at Madeira Airport and Porto Santo Airport. Madeira’s new Intercontinental Airport, boasting a runway of 2781 meters length, has given the island a new image for the new millennium. To extension of the runway by one kilometer was one of the most ambitious constructions on the island. This airport is also considered the Kai Tak of Europe because of its singular approach to runway 5. For the enlargement of the new runway the Funchal Airport has won the Outstanding Structures Award, given by International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering. There are also two banks, a money exchange office and ATM’s and a post office in the Arrivals Hall.
